Earlier this week, RTA Regional Leadership Team member the City of Durham held a groundbreaking celebration for a $26 million renovation and upgrade to the Durham Station central bus facility. The improvements will include increasing the number of bus bays by 40%, adding several electric buses, and incorporating aesthetic improvements that will improve the travel experience for the 14,000 riders that use the station every day.
The upgraded station will also directly serve the future Central Durham BRT route, which will connect Duke University with Downtown and the Village mobility hub just west of the I-885 Connector.
The Durham Station already serves as the central transit hub for GoDurham, the region’s largest transit system. The station will remain open during construction; the project will take around two years to complete.
When finished, it will be a nice addition to the overall transit portfolio for our region’s second largest city, which may soon be the third largest city in the state.
Congratulations to all of Durham, and our region, for launching this important improvement.
Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
