The future of transit, after the 2022 elections…

RTA members and partners,

The growth in our market – both population and geographic extent – has only increased over the last few years. That growth remains largely independent of electoral outcomes at any level of government.

The business community is focused on identifying scalable options to move a viable and flexible regional/commuter rail solution forward that can garner regional support and federal funding. We expect those conversations to continue over the next several months, and that we will get to a successful outcome.

We are also committed to a Freeway And Street-based Transit (FAST) development plan that will create a holistic, “both/and” complement to our upcoming rail and bus rapid transit investments, particularly with our first BRT line in Raleigh only months away from construction. RTA also has pledged a minimum of $100,000 for this FAST 2.0 study starting in 2023.

Looking ahead

RTA believes that the future of regional/commuter rail and an enhanced FAST network can and should occur sooner than 10+ years from now, on both the NCRR (Raleigh/Cary/RTP/Durham) and “S line” (Wake Forest/Raleigh/Cary/Sanford) rail corridors and our expanding, multimodal freeway system.

Our regional community must prioritize inclusive prosperity and housing affordability, and targeted, accelerated mobility investments are a vital part of that.

I am increasingly confident that productive dialogue will lead to productive partnerships — and productive investments for our regional community.

Let’s get moving,

Joe
