West New Bern BRT corridor approved for construction — with 93% dedicated/priority RED lanes

RTA members,

Last Tuesday afternoon, July 2, BRT moved forward in North Carolina.

The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously to approve the  construction contract for the western (area 1) segment of New Bern Avenue BRT, from the city block surrounding GoRaleigh station in Downtown Raleigh east to Poole Road, during the consent agenda for the meeting. Rifenburg North Carolina, LLC was the low bidder and will execute the construction.

Construction activities for this initial western section, which include paving, sidewalk, and utility work, will commence later this summer, and take up to 30 months to complete.

Around 93% of the mileage of this section will be in RED transit priority lanes. RED is both the color and the permitted secondary uses for the lane  (i.e., Right turns, Emergency response, Driveway access/egress).

As we noted in our briefing a few weeks ago — the regional business community thanks all contractors who bid on this section or considered doing so. This is a very important time for bus rapid transit and “Buses Resembling Trains” in the metropolitan Triangle  …  the region will now begin Building Roads for Transit in our market and creating the momentum to accelerate our regional BRT network.

We will be highlighting BRT and enhanced regional transit at our annual RTA brunch event next month on August 8.
