RTA Member Briefing: June 28

You get a grant…

It’s not every week that one of our key partners receives a significant federal grant, supported by RTA, that will jumpstart multimodal transportation. So that alone would be something to celebrate in this week’s briefing.

USDOT announced that the City of Durham would receive more than $12 million to upgrade Holloway Street — the busiest transit corridor in the city — and improve safety and multimodal access for travelers. This is great project spearheaded by RTA Regional Leadership Team member the City of Durham, and we were pleased to support this initiative. We were also pleased that a Triangle area project was the first one mentioned by USDOT Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in his news conference. More in this week’s blog.

… and You get a grant.

It turns out that this week our region received not one but two major federal grants that will advance our mobility future. GoTriangle, working in concert with the Research Triangle Foundation, will receive $25 million to create a new mobility hub in Research Triangle Park. This will relocate the RTP regional transfer center to a location near Miami Blvd. that will be directly served by future BRT along NC 54 as well as future intercity rail.

This is a transformational mobility project spearheaded by RTA Regional Leadership Team members GoTriangle and the Research Triangle Foundation. RTA legislative and policy chair Scott Levitan, who serves as the president and CEO of the Research Triangle Foundation, stated that the RTP mobility hub will “enhance access to employment, education, workforce training, healthcare, shopping, recreation and affordable housing.”  RTA was pleased to support this initiative; learn more in this week’s blog.

And, you have a ticket (or more) included for our annual brunch.

In just over a month, on August 6, we will have our annual RTA summer meeting; this year’s event will be held in concert with the I-40 Regional Partnership. You and your fellow RTA members and clients will be able to network with other regional business leaders, transportation professionals, and elected officials at the event at the Westin RDU Airport Hotel. All RTA basic members have one ticket included with their membership; higher RTA levels (i.e., Bronze and above) have two or more included tickets.

This year’s RTA Transportation Brunch event is presented by the members of the RTA Regional Leadership Team. Our 2024 event sponsors are Martin Marietta, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, and the The SunRock Group.

RSVP here. If you have any questions about registration or sponsoring the event, please reach out to RTA membership operations coordinator Jacob Rigg.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
