Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition — the voice of the regional business community on transportation.
RTA and founding chambers endorse plan to reimagine 15-501 as FAST corridor
RTA and our partner founding chambers in the western Triangle – the Greater Durham Chamber and the Chamber for a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro – have endorsed a proposal by the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro MPO to upgrade 15-501 to an enhanced multimodal corridor. We have submitted a joint letter expressing our support for the proposed concept that would create bus priority lanes, as well as convert 15-501 to a synchronized street south of I-40 while eliminating all stoplights north of I-40. The beauty of the MPO’s proposed 15-501 concept is that it will improve both mobility and accessibility through and along the corridor in a way that helps all modes of travel, fully consistent with the “FAST” mindset. There is an opportunity to further improve the plan, as indicated by the level and quality of public comment – we look forward to continuing to engage on this issue.
RTA 19th annual meeting will get our region moving faster
You know that our mission of delivering business leadership to get our region moving faster is what guides our strategy and advocacy efforts every day. At our RTA 19th Annual Meeting on November 19, we will elevate our “faster” approach with a rapid 19 minute program following a brief welcome and overview. You have tickets included with your membership for this can’t-miss event that will highlight how we can effectively move our region forward amidst uncertainty – register online here.
New Holly Springs service completes Wake Transit “big move”
All 12 municipalities in Wake County are now served by transit with this past week’s launch of a new GoTriangle route to Holly Springs. Connecting all Wake County communities was one of the key objectives, or “Four Big Moves”, of the Wake Transit plan endorsed via voter referendum in fall 2016. RTA led the marketing and media campaign strategy for the referendum to secure dedicated local funding for enhanced transit, and we are delighted to see the progress our partners are making to expand service, implement bus rapid transit, and advance commuter rail.
Your membership in the RTA provides the sustained focus and momentum to move our region forward — thank you for your ongoing support and engagement!
Let’s get moving,
Joe
