RTA Member Briefing: April 25

RDU campus roadway improvements upcoming

The regional business community relies on a successful RDU International Airport for commercial, leisure, and tourism travel, and to support economic development. However, the growth in air travel necessitates continued, strategic investments on both the airside (e.g., runways, taxiways) and landside (terminals, roadways) of the airport campus.

The RDU Airport Authority will soon begin work on significant improvements for John Brantley Boulevard, which is the airport ring road that serves both terminals. Read more on what these improvements may look like, along with an upcoming environmental meeting on the improvements, in this week’s blog.

CAMPO toll funding survey

CAMPO in partnership with the NC Turnpike Authority has released a survey requesting input on the potential use of tolls to accelerate the upgrade of US 1 / Capital Boulevard into a freeway. You can access the survey using this link. RTA has endorsed the accelerated transformation of Capital Blvd. to a multimodal freeway from I-540 to the Wake/Franklin Co. line via dedicated toll revenue, potentially with a reduced toll rate during off-peak periods. You can view our recent public comments in support of this acceleration here.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
