RTA Member Briefing: August 16

Beginning our 23rd Year of Regional Business Leadership

RTA has been at the forefront of championing strategic investments in regional mobility for more than two decades, and we are just getting started. Summer 2024 marks the beginning of our 23rd year with dedicated RTA staff and multiple membership investment levels.

This week’s blog speaks to a handful of the past and ongoing projects the regional business community has focused on through RTA since 2002. Be sure to mark your calendar for the next RTA Annual Meeting: The State of Mobility 2025, scheduled for January 24, 2025, where we will focus on the importance of finding and funding solutions and accelerating projects. You and your colleagues or clients can already register now to secure your spot.

Rain on our 540 parade means good things will have to come to those who wait

As we discussed at last week’s RTA brunch, our multimodal freeways are the backbone of our regional transportation network, and we are only a few weeks away from adding 18 more miles to that network, with the imminent opening of 540 in southern Wake County. The recent tropical storm has played some unfortunate havoc with construction activities and timelines, so we are looking at a September opening instead of late August. While a few weeks’ delay is not ideal, we are still years or decades ahead of where we would have otherwise been without the cooperative leadership of the NC Turnpike Authority, NCDOT, and our consultant partners, as well as CAMPO and our elected officials, in supporting the use of toll revenue to accelerate construction of 540.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
