More investments in a great international airport
The regional business community has maintained the importance of continued investments in RDU airport infrastructure for many years.
We were very pleased to see the Airport Authority approve more than $400 million in major infrastructure improvements related to the construction of the airport’s primary runway at a special board meeting last week. Among the projects approved are the relocation of a portion of existing Lumley Road and nearby roadways to provide space for the new, relocated, and longer runway 5L-23R, along with grading and drainage site work for the runway itself.
These and other investments are critical for current and future travelers at RDU, because the region is expanding, the business community is growing, and the number of flight offerings serving this extended metropolitan region is still increasing. From new international destinations in the Caribbean by BermudAir, to a new flight to the Los Angeles/Orange County, Calif. area by Breeze, RDU is fast approaching 90 nonstop cities.
The RDU primary runway relocation and expansion project has a targeted completion date of 2029. Both RTA and RDU have called it “the most important two miles of pavement in the Triangle.” The new runway will be shifted 537.5 feet to the west. It will be 639 feet longer. And our future primary runway of 10,639 feet length, which will then be the most important 2.01 miles of pavement in the Triangle, will move our region forward.
Let’s get moving,
Joe
