RTA members,
This week we received good news about new federal funding for multiple transit initiatives, as well as a milestone for another transit project.
NCDOT received approval for a federal RAISE grant of $13 million to build a new mobility hub in Wake Forest. This will be the train station along the S-line shortcut intercity rail project from Raleigh to Wake Forest, with a future extension to Richmond, Va.
In Chapel Hill, our friends at Chapel Hill transit received $24m in additional Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding for the town’s North South Bus Rapid Transit corridor (NSBRT).
In addition, the City of Durham has received notice to proceed on its feasibility study of its arterial Central BRT corridor. The study will commence and move forward quickly this year.
These grant, funding notifications, and project advancements all highlight the importance of these major transit and intercity corridors for our region, and they inspire additional confidence, momentum, and support.
This region is in various stages of advancing 10 BRT corridors, and the regional business community is committed to supporting the rapid creation of a regional BRT network. We will highlight the opportunity these corridors present our region — along with a sense of urgency to advance them — at next week’s RTA annual meeting.
Let’s get moving,
