This executive brief, which serves as our Thursday Thoughts at 3 blog for the week, summarizes much of our leadership and advocacy efforts since our 2020 annual meeting in mid-January.

RTA Quarterly Impact Report: Q1 2020

RTA FAST transit study begins this month
RTA, with support from GoTriangle and NCDOT, has launched a study to create a regional Freeway And Street-based Transit (“FAST”) network. RTA Leadership Team member VHB will lead the study; Stantec is a subconsultant. Preliminary FAST study findings will be presented at the RTA Breakfast:  Freeways of the Future on July 17.

Regional commuter rail study upcoming
A GoTriangle follow-up study of ways to initiate regional commuter rail will commence this year. RTA Leadership Team member STV completed the initial study. RTA has endorsed the upcoming study, which will confirm viability and specifics of how to best launch commuter rail successfully in our market.

RTA analysis of “zero fare for everyone” begins sooner than expected
Transit agencies suspended all bus fares regionwide earlier in March due to the coronavirus. RTA has asked Leadership Team member HDR to examine the possibility of a zero fare pilot post-pandemic. The analysis and overview will look at potential future pilot options to maximize benefits while limiting financial risk.

America’s first Dynamic Left Turn intersection (DLTi) pilot launched in Cary
The nation’s first Dynamic Left Turn intersection went into service 45 days ago, thanks to a partnership with NCDOT and the Town of Cary. RTA developed, promoted, and facilitated the innovation to provide off-peak delay relief. RTA is also funding a before-and-after study of compliance with lane control signals at the DLTi pilot site.

Streamlined RTA website activated to better serve members
RTA launched a simplified website in late January 2020. The new letsgetmoving.org site makes it easier to find information, highlights our top priorities, and serves as a better front door for members, prospects, partners, and media. In addition, RTA transitioned to a new logo this month that makes our business voice more prominent.
