A very fast — and very effective — annual meeting

Today marked the 19th annual meeting of the RTA business coalition, and it was unique in several ways.
First of all, it was our first online-only annual meeting, and our second major online event this year, after our RTA Transportation Breakfast. Similar to the RTA breakfast earlier this summer, we were able to provide our members and partners with our business-led perspectives about ongoing or upcoming priorities for the region.
In addition to being online, it was also our fastest annual meeting, and indeed the most rapid event we have ever done, clocking in at just under 30 minutes. The core program, provided by each of our focus area chairs, was only 19 minutes long.
In true “let’s get moving” style, our chairs decided that 19 minutes just wasn’t fast enough, so at their request, I provided an annual meeting report to members in only 3 minutes.
Throughout the meeting, we highlighted a broader focus on equity — for enhanced mobility, all day, for all people. We also emphasized the need for having a sense of urgency within a framework of flexibility, given the volatile, uncertain mobility landscape we are facing in our region and our nation. In addition, this excellent TBJ article, published the day of our annual meeting, highlighted many of our top RTA priorities.
We have an opportunity to leverage what we have learned from the extended work-from-home environment, which is more prevalent in the Triangle than in other metro areas in North Carolina, into a more robust mobility network at potentially a lower cost.
Let me again thank all of our event sponsors and major investors, including our presenting sponsor, the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, and the entire RTA Leadership Team.
2020 has been a challenging and a remarkable year — you can download our RTA 2020 Annual Report here — and the regional business community is not done yet. Our ongoing focus on enhanced transit will continue as we approach the holiday season and into 2021.
More to come — thank you for everyone who joined us at the 19th annual meeting, and thank you for joining the regional business community’s voice for transportation.
Let’s get moving,
Joe
