Let’s make I-40 better and faster… With your help.
Earlier this summer, at the Cary headquarters of RTA Leadership Team member SAS, NCDOT and RTA announced the upcoming activation of an I-40 Rapid, Scalable Implementation Task Force. This focused group will explore and recommend strategic goals for I-40, including “super low cost”, “low cost”, and higher cost recommendations.
The first I-40 task force meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 7, from 2 pm to 4 pm, hosted by fellow RTA Leadership Team member the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina.
Space is limited, so RSVP if you and/or a colleague can join us — any RTA member can participate. Learn more about the task force in this week’s blog, and please contact me directly if you have questions.
Advancing the I-40 exchange station — and I-40 BRT
Continuing with our focus on I-40, RTA Leadership Team members WSP and HH Architecture highlighted at our 2025 brunch event the opportunity for an I-40/RDU Airport Exchange Station. This transit/airport shuttle connection would be built on top of the I-40 freeway near the Aviation Parkway interchange. The regional business community has received excellent media coverage for the concept, including a story on ABC-11 and front page coverage in the Raleigh News & Observer.
As we noted during last month’s event and in the N&O story, RTA will push to accelerate construction of the exchange station and complementary I-40 BRT as soon as possible. This will include the station, ramp links between the station and the existing Bus On Shoulder System (BOSS), as well as incremental transit priority components of an I-40 BRT network, such as direct access ramps and transit bypass lanes and shoulders.
Click on an earlier this recent blog for more information, including updated renderings of the station and a simulation video.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Let’s get moving,
Joe
