RTA Member Briefing: April 18

RTA members and partners,

For this week’s blog, I decided to write about a recent, somewhat unusual plane+train trip that I recently took while returning from a visit to family in Texas, that I believe highlights the effectiveness of our existing NC By Train passenger rail system within North Carolina, along with its promise for future travel.

In summary:  RDU and CLT airports are not directly connected by train, but the communities of Charlotte, Durham, Cary, and Raleigh are all linked together by the very effective NC By Train passenger rail service, and there is a train station located within 10 miles of both CLT Airport (Charlotte) and RDU Airport (Cary). In addition, an outstanding passenger rail expansion is currently under construction between Raleigh and Wake Forest, eventually going to Richmond, Va.

The regional business community through the RTA has supported the development of the southeast rail corridor for two decades and counting. Kudos to NCDOT, and thank you to all state, federal, and private partners who have supported and continue to focus on effective intercity passenger rail. I hope you enjoy the blog, and your weekend.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
