RTA Member Briefing: March 14

RTA members and partners,

Let’s accelerate the Capital Freeway.

RTA has endorsed the accelerated transformation of Capital Blvd. to a multimodal freeway from I-540 to the Wake/Franklin Co. line via toll revenue, potentially with a reduced toll rate during peak periods.

RTA supports this vital upgrade to freeway because it will streamline commuting including transit, help ensure that supply chains can remain functional, and improve travel all-day to, from, and across the northeastern Triangle area.

This week, the RTA Leadership team endorsed a potential clarification of existing turnpike revenue retention statutes. Ratifying this language would further de-risk the project and simplify its accelerated implementation.

Capital Boulevard is already a “toll” road – it is taking a toll on our sanity, and on our ability to get to places in a reasonable amount of time. We are supporting the accelerated creation of a new, reliable, signal free option, as we have noted to the Raleigh News&Observer, CBS 17 and ABC 11 this year.

Learn more about the importance of accelerating the Capital Freeway using dedicated toll revenue in this week’s blog. Please contact me directly with additional questions about the regional business community’s ongoing advocacy efforts for this essential improvement.

Another successful RTA caucus meeting.

This past Tuesday, March 11, we held our first RTA Northeastern Caucus Meeting. The gathering was held in concert with the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce, and served as a joint meeting with the Chamber’s government affairs committee.  The meeting was hosted by RTA Leadership Team member the Town of Wake Forest.

Our primary focus was on accelerating US 1 multimodal freeway in Wake Forest and Raleigh, as noted in the prior blurb. We also received updates on economic growth in northeastern Wake County and progress on the intercity rail corridor between Raleigh, Wake Forest, and Richmond. You can download the slides from the meeting here.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
