The flight options at RDU Airport continue to expand, at a remarkable pace.
In the past three weeks, RDU International has announced 5 new nonstop flights, all to international destinations.
In a recent blog, we noted that RDU is launching a new nonstop flight to Bermuda (via BermudAir) in April, and Calgary (via WestJet) in June. In addition to two new destinations, this also adds two new carriers to Raleigh/Durham International.
But those two new flights were last month’s news. As December began, our region gained three more destinations.
Earlier this week, Air Canada, which already serves Toronto and Montreal from RDU, announced that they would be offering a new nonstop flight to Vancouver beginning in summer 2025. Having just traveled to British Columbia six months ago with my family, I am confident that this will be a welcome addition for travelers headed to Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler, etc., and also to Asia/Pacific destinations including Japan and Korea from the Vancouver/YVR Air Canada hub.
The addition of the Vancouver and Calgary flights this coming June also means that RDU will be connected to Canada’s four largest metropolitan areas by summer 2025.
In addition, Avelo Airlines, which began service to RDU in 2022 and currently serves five east coast destinations including Fort Myers (FL), Manchester (NH), Albany (NY), Rochester (NY), and New Haven (CT), announced two new flights, to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Both of those flights will commence service in February 2025.
These announcements will bring our total number of international destinations to 14, and total nonstop destinations to 74, including seasonal service. This is a wonderful array of new and existing air travel options for businesses and families in the extended Research Triangle area and beyond. And, it is a reminder of the need for air service infrastructure to pay for these options, and it is the reason that identifying a sustainable business model for RDU remains our top strategic priority as an organization.
Let’s get moving,
