RDU Airport gets “fuller” — with more carriers and flights

RTA members and partners,

During the past week, RDU has announced two new international destinations — from two new carriers.

On Friday, November 15, RDU announced that BermudAir would be launching flights to Bermuda beginning this spring. I have personally visited and enjoyed Bermuda, although it has been more than two decades ago. This new flight would make it much easier to visit this non-Caribbean Atlantic vacation and business destination that is less than 850 miles from RDU, and nearly due east from North Carolina. More information here.

Earlier this week, on Monday, November 18, RDU announced that WestJet airlines would commence flights to Calgary, Alberta, Canada this coming spring. While I have not had the chance to visit the Canadian Rockies or prairie provinces, this nonstop flight to central Canada would greatly facilitate trips to Calgary, Edmonton, and Banff and Jasper national parks of Canada, and also improve access to American destinations just south of the border, including Glacier National Park.

More growth in our market means more demand for air travel from our businesses and residents — and more desire to serve that travel from both current and new air carriers. We will continue to need more airport infrastructure and funding for same, along with creative ways to providing that infrastructure and the entire travel experience.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
