RTA members and partners,
This week, our friends at the North Carolina Railroad Company received a federal grant of more than $100 million in Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) funding.
The proposed improvements will be implemented along the NCRR H line / Norfolk Southern Railway (NSR) NC line between Raleigh and Greensboro. The new infrastructure will include two new sidings, a 4.5 mile extension of an existing siding, a new grade separation with a major arterial, and other enhancements.
The three North Carolina funding partners: NCRR, NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and NSR, have committed a total of $65 million in matching funds to support this proposed $170 railway improvement program, which will improve safety, operations, reliability, and supply chain resiliency, while supporting current and expanding freight rail service, existing passenger rail, and future higher speed intercity rail service expansion along the Southeast Corridor.
Kudos to the leadership of NCDOT, NC Railroad Company, and Norfolk Southern for providing essential matching funding for this excellent project that will create rail infrastructure improvements in Raleigh, Cary, Morrisville, Hillsborough, and points west. RTA wrote a support letter for this project over the summer and we believe these improvements will benefit our entire region and state.
Thank you to all of our member businesses and organizations for your continued investment in RTA and our shared mobility future.
Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
