RDU Scores More In 2024 — New FAA Grant Funding, New EV buses

2024 has continued right where 2023 left off at RDU. Not only did our hometown international airport start the year with record-setting traffic this January, with nearly 1,000,000 travelers flying through RDU — more than 10% higher than January 2023, and more than 4% higher than January 2019 — but it also received an additional $12 million FAA grant for Terminal 2.

The grant will help pay to expand Terminal 2’s security checkpoint, baggage claim and Federal Inspection Station station.

In addition, RDU recently agreed to acquire six more EV buses at a significant discount. Normally more than $1 million each, RDU was able to purchase six buses for less than $4 million total from Miami-Dade County who was unable to fulfill their original order due funding.

Sustainable funding for RDU airport remains RTA’s top priority. We are pleased to see to improvements to both the top line (new FAA funding) and middle line (EV bus savings) for RDU.
