“The college of the 540” — Wake Tech — will expand in our region

RTA members  and partners,

RTA Leadership Team member Wake Tech Community College — who hosted us for our 540 field visit earlier this spring — recently completed a land acquisition deal to relocate their Western Wake Campus to Apex near U.S. Highway 1 and N.C Highway 55 thanks to a $350 million successful countywide bond vote last November; Wake Tech will also renovate their RTP campus by adding a new parking deck and cyber security building. In addition, Wake Tech plans on building a simulated hospital via a memorandum of understanding with WakeMed Health and Hospitals and Wake County.

Wake Tech president Dr. Scott Ralls, who serves as RTA workforce and equity chair, noted that these investments “unlock what we need to do right now for jobs, but prepare us long-term for the further growth that’s happening.”

With our growing region, the need for a regionwide transportation system with BRT and FAST (freeway, arterial, street, and tactical) transit infrastructure is increasingly clear. RTA continues to focus on this expansion by targeting these issues in our Accelerated Metropolitan Mobility Strategy.

Kudos to Wake Tech, which has sometimes been called “the college of the 540” due to the number and dispersion of campuses across the county, for continuing to lead on workforce and continuing education in our market — see the graphic below.
