Member Briefing: August 27, 2021

Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition – the voice of the regional business community on transportation.

NCDOT is fixing I-440 for us; let’s help them
This region isn’t “fixing” to improve 440 — NCDOT is fixing 440 right now. While the southwestern portion of the freeway has served us well for more than 50 years, it needs an upgrade. As this week’s RTA blog notes, the modernization of 440 includes a widening of the roadway to three lanes each way, along with safety and operational improvements to various interchanges.  As with any major infrastructure project, there will be temporary ramps and detours — including some significant ones this weekend. Please see this week’s NCDOT news release and the maps here and here for locations. The regional business community offers our best wishes for easy and speedy completion of these improvements. Let’s avoid this area this weekend if at all possible to reduce delays and congestion impacts for NCDOT, and for everyone.

Pre-registration update for RTA 2022 Tour to South Florida
RTA and our partners are hard at work with initial preparations for the Winter 2022 RTA Leadership Briefing and Tour to the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area, where we will experience several types of commuter and passenger rail, and learn about other multimodal investments in the tri-county region. The trip will be held January 26-28, 2022; email Natalie to pre-register. Updated registration and waitlist policies are here; we expect to release pricing details in the next few weeks. Thank you to our presenting sponsors GoTriangle and North Carolina Railroad Company, and our first tour event sponsor WSP. Please let me know if you are interested in sponsoring.

NC fall litter sweep is next month
NCDOT conducts a semiannual litter sweep each April and September; this year’s fall sweep will occur September 11-25. If you or your company are interested in volunteering, please click here to learn more and sign-up. We have enjoyed participating in this event in the past; in addition, RTA volunteers Jim Beley (RTA travel experience chair) and Denny Edwards (RTA business travel chair) continue to serve on an NCDOT litter prevention task force.

Thank you for your support of regional business leadership on transportation.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA Executive Director
