Member Briefing: February 21, 2020

Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition — the voice of the regional business community on transportation.

Triangle’s first roundabout interchange opens in Cary, and Durham
We have been promoting the potential of roundabouts to provide a safer, more efficient exchange between roadways for many years. This month marks the opening of the Triangle’s first completed roundabout interchange – serving 540, via Morrisville Parkway in west Cary. A few months ago, Durham received the region’s first partially-completed roundabout interchange, along Carr Road. We began 2019 with zero roundabout interchanges; we will end 2020 with two, and hopefully more to come in the future.

Clean Tech summit in Chapel Hill focuses on mobility, environment
The UNC Clean Tech Summit is the largest event of its kind in the southeast – and this year is the first time that transportation headlined an entire track. Sessions included electrification, bus rapid transit, and equity in transportation. I had the opportunity to offer brief welcome remarks on Thursday to a group of transportation leaders who are committed to improving transportation and the environment. We applaud RTA Leadership Team member University of North Carolina for their longstanding leadership in this space. RTA will continue the momentum by partnering with the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster on our Innovations Forum event at SAS on April 16 – register here.

Three bus rapid transit meetings in one week in Raleigh
Next week the City of Raleigh will have a kickoff meeting for the future southern bus rapid transit corridor on Monday, February 24. The BRT corridor will serve Raleigh and Garner with high-frequency, reliable, quality service. Later next week, the City will host two more events on equitable development around transit, on Thursday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 29. Learn more about the events here and here.

Thank you for providing regional business leadership on transportation as a member of the RTA!

Let’s get moving,

Joe
