America’s first Dynamic Left Turn Intersection has opened
NCDOT and the Town of Cary launched the nation’s first “dynamic left turn intersection” in Cary today. RTA approached NCDOT with the DLTi concept a little over two years ago, after thinking about a potential way for intersections with two left turn lanes to operate more efficiently during off-peak times. During off-peak periods, the dynamic left turn intersection closes one of the left turn lanes – using an overhead red “X”, similar to what you see by PNC Arena – which enables the display of a flashing yellow arrow during lower volume times. We applaud NCDOT and the Town of Cary for their partnership and willingness to explore innovative techniques like this! We are excited to learn more about the pilot in Cary and the upcoming pilot in Clayton later this spring.
BRT scores big in the Triangle
In our weekly blog, we noted that both Raleigh’s and Chapel Hill’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) projects received a rating of “medium” or higher by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) this week. This is essential for their continued progress under the federal small starts program, and terrific news for transit in the region. The Raleigh New Bern Avenue BRT project actually achieved a score of “medium-high”, which is notable because it is the highest rating a transit corridor in this region has ever achieved — bus or rail.
