Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition – the voice of the regional business community on transportation.
RTA issues statement on regional transit serving western Triangle
This week we released a statement in concert with our founding chambers of commerce from Durham and Chapel Hill-Carrboro, affirming our ongoing focus on accelerating multimodal solutions, particularly in the western Triangle, in light of the discontinuation of the light rail project. The regional business community remains committed to working with our partners to advance frequent transit options for the entire Triangle. I speak about the future of regional transit in this week’s blog and we will certainly have more to say in upcoming RTA communications.
All 540 construction contracts have moved forward
NCDOT opened bids for the third and final construction contract this week to extend 540 in southern Wake County. The winning bidder team — including RTA member Gannett Fleming — proposes to open their section by 2022, consistent with the other sections. The total bid prices for the three construction projects combined are less than the projected total from the corridor financial plan. Kudos to the NC Turnpike and NCDOT for advancing the regional business community’s top transportation priority.
RTA to hold litter sweep with State Highway Patrol and Umstead Hotel
I mentioned last week that RTA is supporting the Spring Litter Sweep effort in concert with NCDOT and the NC State Highway Patrol. I am pleased to let you know that early next month, we have an opportunity to do a joint litter sweep at I-40 exit 287 (Harrison Avenue) in concert with the State Highway Patrol and RTA member firm The Umstead Hotel and Spa. We will meet on Saturday, May 4, at 9 am at The Umstead Hotel and work together for about one hour. Please email me or Natalie for details and to sign-up. Thank you in advance to any members who can assist; more information to come.
Thank you for your support of enhanced regional mobility through your investment in the RTA!
Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA Executive Director
