Giving, and getting, 106%

RTA members and partners,

This week the region received word that the fruits of our cooperative labor were beginning to pay off.

RDU announced on Wednesday, April 20, that the Federal Aviation Administration had approved a longer length for our new replacement runway. Instead of 10,000′, FAA approved a longer 10,639′ length.

Our RTA calculations tell us that we have gained 6% or so in additional approved length upon opening later this decade. Does that extra length matter?

It does. It will make it easier for longer flights to the west coast, and open up more opportunities for travelers to and from our region.

RDU credited Alaska Airlines — a key airline partner — with helping to make the case. They also cited the partnership of elected officials, the regional business community including RTA, and other partners in our letter writing campaign including the Research Triangle Park Foundation and the Triangle-J Council of Governments.

We still have more work to do — we have an ongoing federal funding ask for the replacement of said runway — but if we all continue to give 106%, we will get there.

Please call or reply with questions. Have a great weekend.

Let’s get moving,
Joe
