Travel is a great way to get to know your home better

Earlier this month, my family and I had an opportunity to travel to portions of several states in the Mountain time zone, including Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana.

The high plains, intermountain west, and Rocky Mountains together encompass a variety of terrain — and transportation. Flat and hilly, fast and slow, large cities and small towns.

Our goal was to visit a number of national parks, national monuments, and state parks, and we did so — a total of 8 if my math is correct.

From travel on Denver’s freeways to visiting areas in America’s least populous state where mobile phone service is impossible — we experienced America the beautiful, and America the mobile.

What I came away with, besides great memories and some pretty good iPhone pictures, was a reminder of how vast and varied the land is, and how important it is to tailor solutions to where you are.

Fortunately, our region is doing just that, with a series of interconnected, increasingly multimodal freeways and streets, as well as an emerging metropolitan rapid transit system that will include both commuter rail and bus rapid transit, a future Triangle bikeway, a steadily improving RDU Airport, and so much more.

Over the next several months, we will be elevating an Accelerated Metropolitan Mobility strategy. This will encompass the existing, emerging, and needed elements that will raise the region and its people.

Thank you for your membership and partnership.

Let’s get moving,

Joe
