Bus Rapid Transit – 50+ miles, across 4 counties

The Capital Area MPO has initiated a very promising study that will leverage and extend two of the four approved Wake bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors to create substantially improved mobility options for our region.

The south BRT corridor, along Wilmington and South Saunders Streets in Raleigh, heading towards Garner, is currently slated to be 5 miles long. With a southern extension to Clayton, in western Johnston County, that length will increase to nearly 14 miles.

The west BRT corridor, along Western Blvd, Cary Towne Blvd, Maynard Rd, and East Chatham, will be approximately 11 miles in length between Raleigh and Cary. With a western extension to Morrisville, southeastern Durham, and Research Triangle Park, the corridor length will increase to nearly 25 miles.

The entire corridor may be nearly 40 miles long, serving Wake County border-to-border, plus small portions of Durham and Johnston counties. Adding the eastern (New Bern Avenue) and northern (Capital Blvd) BRT and you have more than 45 miles of BRT from the four Wake BRT corridors plus extensions.

Meanwhile, Chapel Hill Transit is adding their own north-south BRT, which will add another 8 miles to the region’s bus rapid transit mileage, for an overall total exceeding 50 miles.

This is an exciting time to see enhanced bus transit options move forward in the Triangle, and RTA is pleased to support several of these efforts, along with complementary ones including the ongoing FAST study and the I-40 transit priority study that RTA has initiated.

Let’s get moving,

Joe
