Here is a brief weekly update from the RTA business coalition – the voice of the regional business community on transportation.

NC Moves 2050 is moving right along
NCDOT has now completed two rounds of public surveys to guide the update to the state’s 30-year transportation plan – NC Moves 2050. More than 10,000 survey responses were received to help identify transportation challenges, trends, and opportunities that will inform the next phase of the study.  You can view the first NC Moves 2050 monthly newsletter here, and subscribe online here to receive updates.  

I have renewed hope for humanity, or at least for flying
I don’t mind air travel – in fact I am flying today on the way back from Texas –  but I am not a fan of the middle seat (and I don’t know anyone who is). Therefore, a recent article in Wired caught my attention. A Colorado company has a proposed, and apparently FAA-approved, design to make flying “suck less” by improving the middle seat experience. Take a look here–  while the design does not create any more legroom, sharing the armrests may soon be a thing of the past. This is the sort of innovative thinking we should applaud for all forms of transportation. More to come on this.

Texas: land of freeways and feeders
Speaking of my travel to Texas – while visiting family in the Houston metro this week, I was thinking about their frontage road network and how elements of the design might be a possible solution for roads such as Capital Blvd. north of I-440. Called “feeders” in the Houston area, frontage roads run parallel to a freeway providing access to the intersecting roadways and businesses. Learn more in this week’s Thursday Thoughts at 3 blog.
