Lessons from the trail
North Carolina is one of 14 states with mileage along the famous Appalachian trail. I stumbled upon a recent article in the Washington Post this week which noted that the trail has changed dramatically since its inception.
In fact, less than 50% of the trail remains where it was originally established. This was stunning to me. This week’s mid-summer blog provides additional information and observations about the trail, and an analogy for all major transportation corridors.
Annual I-40 Partnership meeting announced
Our next upcoming event is the annual I-40 Regional Partnership meeting, which will be hosted by RTA Leadership Team member SAS on Tuesday, October 10th.
The I-40 Regional Partnership is a cooperative initiative of the RTA business coalition and NCDOT in concert with other mobility partners. The Partnership provides an ongoing focus on Interstate 40 — the main street of our beloved Triangle — in order to maintain and enhance its viability for travel and commerce. I-40 Partnership participants are devoted to improving the travel experience on I-40 and core reliever/alternate routes. This year’s meeting will have presentations and Q&A opportunities for a host of topics involving the Interstate.
Jennifer Portanova, PE, NCDOT State Transportation Systems Management and Operations Engineer, serves as the I-40 Regional Partnership executive. She succeeds longtime partnership executive Meredith McDiarmid, PE, who retired from NCDOT earlier this year. The Partnership held its first meeting in spring 2009 and has met at least annually since that time.
