Starting this coming Monday, Sept. 12, drivers going east on U.S. 70 in Johnston County will experience some additional delays — but for a good cause.
The continued development of Interstate 42 between Garner and the coast will involve construction activities in this stretch of U.S. 70 East indicated as the blue line in this Google map.
This work is part of a $59m contract that will add 5 miles of interstate standard freeway by the fall of 2024.
RTA has been pleased to see the progress of this linkage, which will extend the Wake/Johnston multimodal freeway system in the eastern Triangle. The I-42 freeway will commence at I-40 at the current US 70 freeway / future 540 interchange at the Wake/Johnston line, continuing east along the existing US 70 freeway near Clayton, and then progressing further east towards Goldsboro, on the way to Morehead City.
