FAST study – let’s get the word out on a better mobility future for us all

One week ago today, the regional business community and our partners GoTriangle and NCDOT released the preliminary findings for the Freeway And Street-based Transit (FAST) network concept for the region.

The study is designed to point the way to an effective, higher-frequency, scalable method of creating regional connections for transit.

It builds upon the solid planning and soon-to-be-implementation work that will create 5 bus rapid transit lines in just a few years in our market.

Our regional and state partners will be able to use these findings to inform how the region could connect better, sooner — for more people.

One interesting element of the preliminary findings is that 7 of the 10 proposed FAST freeway and street corridors will link directly with one of the approved BRT lines for the region.

The study findings include innovative “transit advantage” concepts such as direct access ramps between our future BRT lines and our freeway system to reduce delays for transit patrons.

We welcome your feedback — please share download the preliminary study findings presentation via letsgetmoving.org/FAST. Share the information with your colleagues and provide comments via fast@letsgetmoving.org anytime between now and August 31.

Kudos to the VHB consultant team — including fellow RTA members Stantec and Catalyst Design — for developing a technically sound, still draft concept for the region to review, explore, and vet over the next few months.

RTA and our study partners are committed to the transformation of our highway network into true multimodal freeways and streets that provide significant and sustainable advantages for public transit buses, along with enhanced access and mobility for all modes of travel.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA Executive Director
