If you were to take the South Saunders Street exit (I-40 exit 298-B) towards Downtown Raleigh, as you travel along the ramp, and look at the inside of the loop you would see … nothing.
But something is coming. In fact, something is already happening.
NCDOT, in concert with the City of Raleigh, has begun improving the landscaping for this and other interchanges in south Raleigh.
What has happened so far at South Saunders is removal of trees and undergrowth, in preparation for new plantings. New landscaping will be added – with unique designs at each interchange – over the next several months. While it will take multiple growing seasons for everything to be established and for each of the gateway interchanges to have a “finished” look, we will see results before that time.
The goal of this initiative, as noted by Boyd Tharrington with NCDOT Division 5 at our I-40 Partnership Meeting earlier this fall, is to develop landscaping plans that maximize visual impact in interchange areas – while retaining a reasonable maintenance cost.
RTA has been a supporter and partner for this initiative, and we look forward to the improvements at the southern gateways to our capital city.
Let’s get moving,
