RTA Member Briefing: February 28

RTA members and partners,

As February fades from the calendar, and last week’s snow fades from our memories, we were able to enjoy positive moments of collaboration and momentum for our regional BRT network, and continued success for our hometown international airport and its patrons. See below for a few items and be sure to register for our northeastern caucus if you have an interest.

RTA and NCDOT host webinar on BRT

Earlier this week, NCDOT and RTA  presented the North Carolina BRT Opportunity Webinar. The event theme was “Building Roads for Transit:  Construction, Funding, and Benefits of BRT Infrastructure”.  The event brought together attendees from the contracting, transit, and general business community. Kudos to NCDOT for their ongoing, increasing leadership on bus rapid transit in our region and state. Learn more — including viewing the slides and recording — via links in this week’s blog.

Can you believe there are 75+ nonstop destinations from RDU Airport

RDU announced this week that there are now 76 nonstop destinations from Raleigh/Durham. The success of RDU is intertwined with the growth and prosperity of our region. To maintain that success and opportunity will require a heightened focus on the new ways of funding, financing, envisioning, and building infrastructure at RDU. RTA will remain engaged and supportive of RDU’s leadership in explore new ways to advance the financial position of the airport.

Register now for RTA northeastern caucus in Wake Forest.

On Tuesday, March 11, we will hold our first RTA Northeastern Caucus Meeting. The gathering will held in concert with the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce, and serve as a joint meeting with the Chamber’s government affairs committee.  The meeting will be held from 8 am to 10 am and hosted by RTA Leadership Team member the Town of Wake Forest.

Our primary focus will be on accelerating US 1 multimodal freeway in Wake Forest and Raleigh; we will also receive updates on economic growth in northeastern Wake County and progress on the intercity rail corridor between Raleigh, Wake Forest, and Richmond. (There is no cost to attend, but you must pre-register online using this link.).

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA executive director
