Tom Tom says “Go” to the Triangle

RTA members,

Tom Tom has come out with its most recent traffic index rankings, and the Triangle area performed well.

As a level set:  the company’s rankings evaluate 500 cities across 62 countries based on travel times and congestion levels. As noted in their press release on Wednesday, more than 75% of cities surveyed had overall travel speeds decrease over the past year, although speeds under optimal conditions remained stable.

The TomTom traffic index included data about several cities in North Carolina. The overall rankings for Raleigh note that we do well from a congestion and travel time standpoint (source link). Raleigh has a travel time rank of 465 or 469 out of 500 (which is very good), and a congestion rank of 435 or 369 out of 500 (also quite good). These rankings are due to a variety of factors, including road infrastructure, construction activities, and so on.

Our average travel speeds are 3-4 MPH lower during the afternoon peak period versus the morning, and it takes us a around 1.5 minutes longer to travel 6 miles in the evening versus morning, whether we are talking about city center or metro area.

These are positive findings — but not time to rest on our mobility laurels. If we continue to keep moving on transportation infrastructure we will keep moving well overall.

Let’s get moving,

RTA executive director
