A celebration of mobility to the coast

I have been at the beach for much of this week, as part of an annual-or-more-often ritual that celebrates the proximity of our beloved Triangle area to our equally beloved North Carolina coastline.

Spending time with family and friends, whether at home or elsewhere, is an essential part of life, and of living. That invariably involves travel, and having a functioning highway system is essential to bringing people together.

One might even say that transportation is vital for mental health, as anyone who has ever been stuck on I-40 in RTP traffic (back when we had daily rush hour traffic) can attest.

For this week’s blog, I simply want to marvel at the effectiveness of our North Carolina highway system, particularly in the Triangle and eastern North Carolina. From US 64 (future I-87) to US 264 (future I-587) to US 70 (future I-42) to I-40, there are at least four freeways or future freeway corridors that can get us quickly and safely to all of our coastal resources. While there is still much to do, these roadways have steadily made things faster and better for North Carolinians and our visitors.

As the NC General Assembly looks to make transportation funding and policy better for our growing state, it is important to remember that the investments we make are for commerce, tourism, recreation, and connections — now and in the future.

Let’s get moving,

Joe
