New nonstop flight to Paris secured through RDU, community partnership

Delta Air Lines has announced a new daily non-stop flight between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Paris-Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) beginning May 2016.

The new flight establishes RDU as the only non-hub airport in America with two daily, nonstop transatlantic flight

The Regional Transportation Alliance business coalition launched the business community’s efforts to secure a new international flight in December with the announcement of the Air Service Advancement Project (ASAP), a three-year marketing initiative to recruit and promote new international service from RDU.

National experts discussed the RDU-Paris flight potential this spring at the annual RTA Transportation Breakfast, an event that highlighted the Triangle business community’s support for new international service and opportunities for success.

Bruce Sargent of IBM Corporation and RTA air service chair said, “We are pleased to see us go from possibility to approval of a nonstop Paris flight in just a few months and delighted to see the cooperative efforts of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority and many community partners come to fruition with this new transatlantic service from Delta Air Lines.”

Nonstop service between RDU and CDG will provide improved connections to more than 40 new foreign destinations, expanding the Triangle region’s global reach and attracting new talent.

Steve Brechbiel of Quintiles and RTA chair-elect said, “Direct access to a major European site like Paris also improves access to Asia, a market that has become increasingly important to our business. This new flight is not only about enhanced access for us to Europe and Asia; it is also about access to the Triangle from those growth markets.”

New service to an international gateway such as Paris will multiply the ability of our area’s major universities to grow their research and outreach programs and maximize regional competitiveness.

RTA Executive Director Joe Milazzo II, PE, said, “The business community’s goal for improved international air service from RDU is to help create and sustain a virtuous circle of enhanced investment from global companies in our market. With nonstop access to Paris and new, one stop access to dozens of destinations including Naples, Florence, and Kuala Lumpur, the new flight will complement our market’s existing transatlantic service and demonstrate how central and eastern North Carolina is truly connected to the world.”
