Here is a brief weekly update on some items of interest and current activities of the RTA business coalition–feel free to share with your associates.

Legislative budgets advance top RTA priorities
The North Carolina House budget approved last week advances two of RTA’s top three priorities for 2017: funding for RDU and a fund for low-cost roadway improvements like turn lane additions. The House budget bill includes more than $50 million over the next two years for RDU Airport for vital projects including rebuilding our primary runway (“5L-23R”). The budget also creates a new $24 million statewide fund – requested by RTA – for low-cost, rapid impact projects. These House budget provisions and amounts are identical to those approved by the Senate in May.

I-40/Fortify is moving forward to completion
The I-40/Fortify project has begun the process of moving to its final traffic pattern. NCDOT has removed some segments of barrier wall and is actively working to move traffic to newly-rebuilt outside lanes on I-40 westbound in the section between Gorman Street and the I-40/440 split in southeast Raleigh. Additional traffic shifts and barrier removals will occur in both directions of I-40 throughout the summer, with each one creating more available shoulder space for drivers – which will hopefully reduce both the likelihood of and traffic impacts from crashes or disabled vehicles.

Learn about imminent Cary Parkway/High House improvements
The Town of Cary will host an open house this Tuesday, June 13, to showcase construction plans for improvements at Cary Parkway and High House Road – one of the most prominent, and congested, intersections in Cary. The meeting takes place from 5-8 p.m. at the Cary Senior Center. The improvements – which include new right-turn and left-turn lanes – are slated to begin in this fall and be completed by fall 2018.

15 years, and then some
This week I celebrated 15 years with your RTA business coalition. It has been an honor to serve the regional business community and work with great chairs, vice chairs, and professional colleagues to help bring success for our market. I will begin posting some thoughts on our RTA blog and my blog this coming week.

Thank you for your longstanding membership, and let’s get and keep moving.
