Here is a brief weekly update on some items of interest and current activities of the RTA business coalition–feel free to share with your associates.
RTA supports regional electric bus application
GoTriangle, in partnership with GoRaleigh, GoCary, GoDurham, and Chapel Hill Transit, is submitting a strong regional application for a federal grant to deploy up to nine battery-electric buses in our market. This initiative is being supported by Proterra, an electric bus manufacturer and RTA member, who will provide additional financial support. RTA has endorsed this application to advance alternative fuel technologies as part of our regional transit future. In addition, RDU Airport has an active invitation for bid to purchase four electric buses for their operations.
Raleigh bike share program moves forward
The City of Raleigh is moving forward with a bike share system featuring a “smart bike” framework, electric-assist bicycles, real-time bike and station information, and a mobile app. The program is expected to launch this coming March with 300 bikes and 30 stations. RTA formally supported bike share last year and we are pleased to see this collaborative approach to developing a potential future regional bike share system in concert with our region’s expanding greenway, bicycle lane, and bicycle track network.
CSX executive to speak at RTA Breakfast
This week, CSX provided an update on the Carolina Connector (CCX) intermodal terminal project in Rocky Mount, near I-95 and future I-87. The facility-which will serve as a major freight and logistics hub in the southeast- is expected to break ground next year and be operational by 2020. CSX has highlighted the importance of interstate access to the location as well as its proximity to the Triangle market. A CSX executive will provide more information on the CCX initiative at our RTA breakfast next month – be sure to register for the event; let me know if you are interested in having your firm sponsor as well.
Thank you for your leadership in RTA to advance key multimodal priorities in the Triangle market!
