Outstanding breakfast event on RDU air service
The regional business community gained valuable insights from the SVP – Network Planning of our largest air carrier at our annual breakfast event this morning. Joe Esposito of Delta Air Lines highlighted the reasons that Delta has chosen Raleigh-Durham for a focus city and the ongoing upside that Delta sees with our market. We also gained insights into their domestic and global strategy from the breakfast and a terrific Q&A session – see media coverage here and here, and social media here:  @RTATriangle and #RTAbfast18. Also, congratulations to RDU’s Dave Young for receiving the RTA 2018 Transportation Champion award for his excellent work on attracting new flights for our region!

Get RDU weekend terminal parking at the weekday park-and-ride price
Speaking of RDU, the Airport now offers weekend travelers a great deal on parking:  You can park in the lots near the terminals (“RDU Park Central”) for the same price as park and ride 3 (“Economy 3”). Here is the key:  you have to reserve it online in advance, and you have to stay through the weekend (i.e., in after Friday noon, out before Monday noon, and minimum 48 hour stay within that 72 hour period). This is an example of where a regional entity has looked at their parking demands — which are lower on weekends — and is passing the availability and savings to their customers. You can learn more about ParkRDU options here.

New I-885 in Durham is moving along nicely
The Triangle Connector to I-85 – aka the Durham East End Connector and eventually to be known as I-885 – is progressing nicely. This new freeway was our highest priority project until it went under construction in April 2015, and we look forward to its completion next year. Providing a direct freeway connection between I-85 towards Richmond, Va. and NC 147 south towards I-40 and 540, the new I-885 will also reduce traffic on Durham roads and streets. The N&O recently put together a great article on how the project is moving along; more info from NCDOT here.

Thank you to everyone who attended the breakfast this morning, and to each of you for your engagement in the region’s business voice on transportation!

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
