Upgraded interchange for I-40/Airport Blvd. advancing
Next week, NCDOT will present two design options for an upgraded interchange for I-40/Airport Blvd. that will improve the flow of traffic from I-40 towards RDU Airport and the Town of Morrisville. Construction is slated to begin next year and be completed in 2020. My sense is that either design option, or a combination of the two, will be a great improvement for travelers. We appreciate NCDOT’s leadership in advancing this project; you can learn more this Tuesday at the public meeting.
RDU breaks more passenger records in 2017
Our hometown international airport continues to increase its offerings and usage, with 2017 seeing marked growth over the previous year and the highest number of passengers in our region’s history. RDU added 9 new nonstop flights this past year and experienced more than a 5% increase in passenger traffic over 2016. In addition, more than 80% of all available seats were filled in 2017, which RDU reports is the highest load factor in five years. RTA will continue to focus on efforts to fund the RDU master plan, which provides a scalable and effective plan for growth of our airport and our region.
Our market makes the HQ2 shortlist
We were very pleased to see the Triangle make the top-20 list of finalists for Amazon HQ2. This means our market has at least met Amazon’s basic threshold for their HQ2 criteria. There have been several positive comments about our region’s advantages, including a CNBC analysis that ranked us first among all finalists. We will continue to support our regional economic development partners on this and other efforts.
Thank you for investing in the RTA business coalition to accelerate regional mobility!
Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
