2018-19 RTA Action Plan approved
Last week the RTA Steering Committee approved our business plan for 2018-19. The document has been simplified┬ácompared to our 2017-18 action plan, but our top 5 priorities remain largely the same, with accelerating 540 continuing to be our top priority. As always, our plan of work will emphasize growing our strength, providing business leadership, and advancing solutions for our region. We look forward to excellent discussions with our Leadership Team and Bronze members on plan implementation at next month’s Retreat.

RDU-San Diego nonstop service begins
The Triangle is an incredible place to live and work, but in all fairness San Diego probably has us beat in terms of overall year-round climate, although I like the fact that it can snow here. Rapidly expanding Frontier Airlines launched new nonstop service between RDU Airport and San Diego this week — previously our region’s top unserved destination — so you can now travel there directly and do the weather comparison yourself. Kudos to RDU Air Service Development Manager Dave Young who we recognized at last month’s RTA Breakfast for his work over the last 6 years — RDU has added more than 25 nonstops during that time and we are now at 62 destinations with San Diego.

Garner to get a “super” solution for 401
Yesterday I attended a very effective public meeting on upcoming improvements for a portion of US 401 in and near Garner. NCDOT will widen the road from four to six lanes and convert the corridor and intersections to a “synchronized superstreet” – sometimes called a “synchronized street” for short. NCDOT and RTA Leadership Team member AECOM are partnering on the design which will enable simultaneous synchronization of traffic lights in both directions. 401 is a major connector in southern Wake County between I-40 and future 540, and these improvements will reduce travel times and delays, improve safety for drivers and pedestrians, and enhance accessibility. This is a “super” win for Garner, Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, and other travelers.

Thank you for your investment in the RTA business coalition, providing the focus needed for faster results.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
