Here is a brief weekly update on some items of interest and current activities of the RTA business coalition–feel free to share with your associates.
New interchanges begin process of upgrading U.S. 70 to a freeway
One of the best ways to relieve congestion on I-40 will be to improve U.S. 70 and make it a better alternative route. New interchanges serving TW Alexander Dr. and Brier Creek Parkway will remove traffic signals on US 70 and provide free-flow travel between the Durham County line and I-540. RTA jump-started this effort five years ago when we successfully requested state Mobility Fund funding for a new interchange at Brier Creek. Upgrading U.S. 70 to a freeway between 540 and Durham is RTA’s top freeway conversion priority in the region.
Raleigh Union Station over halfway complete
The Triangle Business Journal provides a glimpse into the progress of Raleigh Union Station in this slideshow. The hub is expected to open in the first quarter of 2018, serving as Raleigh’s new Amtrak station and home to future commuter rail service called for in the approved, 10-year Wake Transit plan. Raleigh Union Station and a proposed, adjacent bus facility will serve as the multimodal center of the Capital City.
RDU Airport growth – 4 new airlines in 4 years
Our hometown international airport continues to perform at a very high level for our growing region. In the past four years, RDU Airport–and our community–has gained:
– 24 new routes, including a new transatlantic flight to Paris
– 13 new markets, including Austin and Seattle,
– 4 new airlines, once Virgin America launches this fall, and
– 1 newly renovated terminal
The above four bullets paint a remarkable picture of four exciting years of growth – and the best is yet to come.
Thank you for your membership in the business coalition keeping our region moving!
Let’s get moving,
