NC Turnpike wins global award
The most advanced turnpike in America — the one in our backyard — received another award this month. The International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) awarded the NC Turnpike Authority with a 2018 toll excellence award at their annual meeting this week. The award recognized the “Customer Value and Interoperability through Tri-Protocol Reader Technology” — the gist being we can use E-ZPass, SunPass, or Peach Pass — in addition to our own NC Quick Pass — throughout the existing system. Congratulations to the Turnpike, which has provided new mobility via Toll 147/540 for almost seven years, and which plans to open bids on the newest extension for 540 next month.
Options presented for Maynard Rd. grade separation
This week I attended an NCDOT meeting on an excellent proposed improvement involving the Maynard loop in Cary and the NC Railroad Company corridor. This fully-funded project will ensure that Maynard Rd. goes either over or under the railroad, which will improve safety and efficiency. There will definitely be impacts to traffic and commerce during construction, and conversations will continue as to the best way to minimize or deal with those. With commuter rail coming on line within a few years, the sooner this improvement is in place the better — it will not be an easy construction project to deal with, and yet it may never be easier than it is right now.
I-440 modernization moves toward construction
NCDOT has just awarded the contract to complete the region’s most important freeway reconstruction project. The project will widen and modernize more than 6 miles of I-440 and US 1, adding a new travel lane in each direction between I-40 and Wade Avenue, and improve interchanges. In addition, the project will create new bridges to separate highway and rail traffic near Blue Ridge Road just west of I-440. Two through travel lanes will always be maintained on I-440 during prime travel hours. This vital project will remove the key bottlenecks on the last two-lanes-each-way section of the I-440 Raleigh Beltline. We are pleased to see this project funded and moving forward to construction early next year.
