RTA is pleased to partner with the NC Department of Transportation and the NC State Highway Patrol for the statewide Spring Litter Sweep initiative, which began April 13 and runs through this Saturday, April 27.
One of our primary goals is to help increase awareness of this effort to improve the appearance and travel experience of our roadways for residents, commuters, and visitors alike.
NCDOT has noted that, in addition to the literally millions of dollars spent to clean up trash along our highway system, litter “can have a negative impact on tourism and how people perceive the state while they travel through it.”
Even more importantly, there is a real safety concern associated with certain types of litter. We have learned that during the five year period from 2012-2016, there were more than 2,500 crashes on North Carolina roadways due to unsecured loads, with 14 resulting in fatalities.
Given the safety issues associated with debris falling out of moving vehicles, NCDOT is displaying “STATE LAW / PROPERLY SECURE ALL LOADS” and “ALWAYS COVER AND SECURE ALL LOADS” on overhead signs across the state during daily sign testing throughout the statewide campaign.
RTA’s support of 2019 NC Litter Sweep efforts will continue even after the campaign ends. On the morning of the following Saturday, May 4th, RTA will partner with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and RTA Leadership Team member firm The Umstead Hotel and Spa to do a litter sweep of the I-40 interchange area around exit 287.
Thank you to all RTA members and volunteers, and to our partners with NCDOT and the NC State Highway Patrol.
Let’s improve the appearance and safety of our region’s roadways, together.
Let’s get moving,
Joe Milazzo II, PE
RTA Executive Director
