As we close out 2017, RTA’s top priority – Accelerate 540 – has just done exactly that, with the acceleration of a key project milestone.

The NC Turnpike Authority and NCDOT announced today that the federal government has signed the final environmental impact statement for the entire proposed 540 corridor between its current terminus at NC 55 in Holly Springs and Interstate 87 (US 64/264/Knightdale bypass).

This approval occurred an incredible eight months ahead of schedule, and it brings the project much closer to construction.

The acceleration of 540 has been the regional business community’s top freeway priority for nearly three years, and our number one transportation priority since late 2016.

This is a critical step forward for America’s Most Forward-Moving Region. 540 will complete a vital link in our regional highway network while providing direct freeway connections for commuting, commerce, transit, and tourism.

Kudos to NC Turnpike Authority Executive Director Beau Memory, NCDOT Secretary Jim Trogdon, and the entire Turnpike and NCDOT team – working in concert with the Federal Highway Administration and a host of resource agencies – who have provided the focus needed to accelerate this vital project.

Let’s get moving,

Joe Milazzo II, PE
