NC 54 east of Chapel Hill is a critical regional roadway in the Triangle. It provides the primary connection between Chapel Hill — including the University and the hospital complex — with I-40, RDU Airport, Research Triangle Park, and points east.
The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metro Planning Organization (DCHC MPO) recognizes the importance of the increasingly congested NC 54 and they commissioned a study during 2010 to examine the corridor from a highway, transit, and land use perspective.
Current RTA focus
The RTA supports the ongoing focus on land use and transit, and encourages additional exploration of highway and transit elements to ensure that the short- and long-term mobility and access needs for the corridor are addressed in order to reduce congestion, enhance travel alternatives, and preserve quality of life.
We support the timely implementation of synchronized street and free-flow street elements, including a new connector to I-40 from Fearrington Road to relieve congestion near the existing NC 54 interchange with I-40.
